GLEMTE SANGE | NANNA BECH + NORDISK DANS
Join us for Nanna Bech’s release concert for the album “Glemte Sange”, where the superstitious, cheeky and morbid folk ballads of the past are transformed into contemporary, relatable indie-folk poetry. After the concert, you will be invited to join a chain dance, where we will sing traditional ballads together. Later in the evening, Nordisk Dans will invite everyone into more communal dancing.
Each song on “Glemte Sange” takes its lyrical starting point in an old folk ballad and brings it into a modern soundscape where folk, indie pop and a touch of folk noir are woven together. The minimalist instrumentation and Nanna’s gentle, welcoming voice stand in sharp contrast to the confronting, quirky and at times macabre lyrics. This tension between the soft and the brutal creates an intimate, vibrating space at her concerts, inviting the audience to come close to the stories.
Following the concert, Nanna offers a workshop where you can step into the world of folk ballads and traditional ballad singing yourself. Here, you will encounter the traditional folk ballads that inspired the newly written songs.
Participants will learn a simple refrain, so everyone can join in, regardless of musical experience, and together you will sing traditional ballads. The workshop will include elements of chain dance/stomp dance, storytelling and communal singing. It creates a strong sense of community, offering historical insight, a physical experience and the feeling of being part of a living, shared ritual.
NANNA BECH
There is something raw, poetic and unfiltered about Danish singer and songwriter Nanna Bech, whom GAFFA has described as someone who “serves great songs in small disguises”. With her new Danish-language album “Glemte Sange”, she draws lyrical inspiration from the macabre, erotic and superstitious folk ballads of the Middle Ages. The album will be released in 2026.
It all began 20 years ago, when Nanna found a dusty book collection from 1853 in a library basement: twelve heavy volumes filled with old Danish folk ballads. The lyrics - macabre, mysterious, beautiful, humorous and some more than 200 verses long - stayed with her. Today, they form the lyrical engine of her songwriting.
Joining Nanna on stage are multi-instrumentalist Laue Bech, percussionist and singer Mette Marie Jensen Ørnstrup, and singer Annamarie Roselil Søndergaard.
