KATARINA BARRUK

Katarina Barruk is known as one of Sábmie’s most esteemed live artists. Her unique voice and indigenous vocal techniques, in combination with a steadfast presence on stage creates a space of vulnerability and strength that is unlike anything else. She delivers a fierce, yet deeply down-to-earth, mix of pop music, traditional joik and improvisational elements.

“It’s incredible – almost not credible – that she’s managed to become something that never existed before: an internationally renowned Ume Sámi touring artist.“ - The Line of Best Fit writes about Katarina.

The last decade Katarina has toured through Europe and she became the first Sámi artist to perform at the Royal Albert Hall (BBC Proms).

Katarina sings in her father tongue, Ume Sámi language. Last year Barruk wrote the music to the first Ume Sámi theatre show in 100 years, “Guh Lejmeh Sámieh“ which she also released as an EP in 2025.

The language is on UNESCO's red list of critically endangered languages.

"Doing music in Ume Sámi is a way of inviting my friends and the audience into my universe, where Ume Sámi is norm, highly topical, and alive."

Barruks powerful and unmistakably clear voice has built a captive audience over the years. It is no coincidence that in recent years, she has performed at festivals with a pioneering character such as the Roskilde Festival, Iceland Airwaves and Paléo Festival. Alongside these acclaimed festival appearances, she has also brought her own music to the concert hall, performing with leading orchestras across Scandinavia, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.

Her second album “Ruhttuo” (2022) with the producers Arnljot Nordvik and Christo Stangness, cemented the singer’s reputation for not taking well-trodden paths and instead going her own way.
