SÖNDÖRGŐ
The primordial nature of traditional music, the sophistication of classical compositions, the energies of rock music and the purity of Bartók's thinking characterize the Hungarian band Söndörgő, one of the most exciting, innovative and successful bands on the international world music scene.
Four of the band’s five members belong to the same musical family: three brothers and a cousin from the Eredics family. They grew up with South Slavic folk music, with their musical roots in the legendary Vujicsics Ensemble. Drawing on a deep understanding of these traditions, Söndörgő explores what this music can mean today and tomorrow.
In 2024, the band released the critically acclaimed album Gyezz, featuring jazz saxophonist Chris Potter. The album earned four-star reviews from Jazzwise and Songlines and reached number one on the World Music Charts Europe. The following year, Söndörgő celebrated their 30th anniversary with the album XXX and an extensive tour across Europe and Japan.
As Ensemble of the Season at Müpa Budapest, the band has explored the meeting of folk, classical music and jazz alongside guests including Márta Sebestyén, the Balanescu Quartet and members of Snarky Puppy. A selection of these recordings will be released in autumn 2026 as the live album In Residence at Müpa.
After three decades, Söndörgő continues to reimagine South Slavic and Balkan musical traditions as a living, evolving source of inspiration.
